Part Time Work From Home Jobs: Pay, Hours, and Where to Look

VidPuff Team·Oct 24, 2026·Updated Oct 29, 2026·6 min read

The most realistic part time work from home jobs are translation and interpreting, medical transcription, customer service, editing and proofreading, and freelance work you take on by the project. Part-time schedules are common in the first two, possible in customer service, and something you build yourself in editing and freelancing. Median pay for these jobs runs from about $19 to $37 an hour, based on May 2025 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Below is what each job pays, how flexible the hours really are, where to search, and the warning signs of fake offers. This guide doesn't list openings, because those go stale within weeks.

How many part-timers work from home?

More than you might think. The Bureau of Labor Statistics American Time Use Survey for 2025, released in June 2026, found that 35% of employed people did some or all of their work at home on days they worked.

The detailed table splits that out:

Group (2025)Share who worked at home on days workedAverage hours worked at home
Full-time workers34.9%5.35
Part-time workers32.1%3.55
People with one job33.7%5.19
People with more than one job41.2%4.49

Two things stand out. Part-timers work from home almost as often as full-timers, just for fewer hours a day. And people holding more than one job are the most likely to do some of it at home, which fits anyone stacking a part-time remote gig on top of a main job.

Part time work from home jobs and what they pay

The figures below are national medians from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 data. BLS doesn't publish separate pay for remote or part-time workers, so these cover everyone in the job. Use them for scale, not as a promise of what a listing will pay.

JobMedian pay, May 2025What BLS says about part-time and remote work
Medical transcriptionist$19.43 an hour"Part-time work is common"; may work from home
Customer service representative$21.53 an hour"Some work part time"; working from home "possible in some companies"
Interpreter or translator$28.93 an hour"Part-time work is common"; may work remotely
Editor$37.46 an hourMost work full time; offices may be "onsite with their employer or from a remote location"

Notice that the two jobs where BLS calls part-time work "common" are also the two with clear remote options. That's where the search is easiest.

The jobs, one by one

Translation and interpreting

This is the strongest fit for jobs that work from home part time. BLS says part-time work is common, schedules vary, and self-employed translators "are able to set their own schedules." About 28% of people in the field are self-employed. Interpreters may work remotely over video or phone, and translators often work from home on documents. The catch is that you need real fluency in two languages, and BLS notes there can be "periods of limited work and periods of long, irregular hours." Expect uneven months at first.

Medical transcription

BLS says transcriptionists "may work from home, receiving dictation and submitting drafts electronically," and that home-based workers "may have flexibility in determining their schedules." BLS says they typically need a certificate rather than a degree. The field is shrinking as speech recognition does more of the typing, so much of the work is now editing a machine draft. It's still one of the clearest part-time remote setups on this list.

Customer service

Customer service is the largest remote category, and part-time shifts exist. BLS says "most customer service representatives work full time, some work part time," and that the job often needs people at busy times, "which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays." That last part can help you: an evening or weekend shift is often what a company most needs filled. Our guide to customer service work from home jobs covers the equipment and setup.

Editing and proofreading

BLS says most editors work full time, but also that most work in offices "whether onsite with their employer or from a remote location." Part-time editing usually means freelancing: proofreading for small businesses, self-published authors, or content teams by the project. BLS puts about 9% of editors as self-employed. It pays well per hour, but finding steady clients is the hard part, which BLS points out too.

Freelance project work

Bookkeeping, writing, design, and virtual assistant work can all become part-time if you sell them by the project or by the month. BLS says most bookkeeping clerks work full time in offices, so part-time remote bookkeeping almost always means freelance clients rather than a job ad. Our post on freelance work from home explains how to find the first few clients.

Where to find part time WFH jobs

Searching "part time wfh jobs" on a big job board returns a lot of noise. A few habits help:

  • Search the job title, then filter. Try "remote medical transcription part time" or "remote Spanish interpreter," then use the board's schedule and remote filters.
  • Read the schedule line. Many "part-time" ads still want a fixed shift. If you need full control of your hours, look at freelance or per-assignment work instead of employee roles.
  • Use free public sites. The FTC points job seekers to USAJobs.gov for federal jobs and CareerOneStop for a broad search. Neither charges you to apply.
  • Ask people you've worked with. A former manager or colleague is often faster than a job board for project work.

How to spot part-time job scams

Short hours, home-based, and good pay is exactly the pitch scammers use. The FTC's job scam guide lists the signs:

  • Paying to get hired. The FTC says real employers, including the federal government, never ask you to pay to get a job.
  • A check you deposit and partly send back. "The check will bounce, and the bank will want you to repay the amount of the fake check."
  • Reshipping packages. The FTC says "reshipping goods is never a real job."
  • Big money for little work. An offer that claims you can make a lot of money in a short time with little work is "almost certainly a scam," according to the FTC.

Before you accept anything, search the company name with "scam" or "complaint." Report fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

A note on taxes

If you freelance or take contract work, nobody withholds tax for you. The IRS says you owe self-employment tax at 15.3% once your net self-employment earnings reach $400. Ask a tax professional about your own situation.

A project instead of a shift

Every option above trades hours for pay. If you'd like something you build in your spare hours instead, a faceless YouTube channel is one route. VidPuff writes a script from a title, adds narration, visuals, music, and captions, and lets you review each stage before it renders a long-form video. It can take months to earn anything, so treat it as a slow build next to the paying work. Our YouTube side hustle guide shows what the first months look like.

FAQ

What part time work from home jobs pay the most?

Of the jobs here, editing has the highest BLS median at $37.46 an hour in May 2025, followed by interpreting and translation at $28.93. Both need strong skills: editing experience or fluency in two languages. Part-time editing usually means freelance clients.

Are there jobs that work from home part time with no experience?

Some customer service roles hire without experience, and BLS lists a high school diploma as the typical entry level. Part-time shifts in customer service are often evenings or weekends. Most other part-time remote work, like translation or transcription, needs a skill or certificate first.

How many hours do part-time remote workers work at home?

In the 2025 American Time Use Survey, part-time workers who worked at home averaged 3.55 hours of work at home on the days they worked. Full-time workers averaged 5.35 hours.

Are part time WFH jobs legit?

Many are, but this search attracts scams. The FTC says real employers never ask you to pay to get a job, and that check-cashing and reshipping "jobs" are scams. If an offer promises big money for a few hours a week, walk away.
