Nurse Work From Home Jobs: Remote Roles, Pay, and License Rules

VidPuff Team·Oct 21, 2026·Updated Nov 2, 2026·7 min read

The most common nurse work from home jobs are telephone triage and telehealth, case management, utilization review, remote patient monitoring, clinical documentation review, and nursing informatics. Most of them want an RN license and a few years of bedside experience, and nearly all of them need a license that's valid in the state where your patients are. Below is what each role involves, what the pay data says, and where to look, with no job listings (they go stale within weeks).

What remote nursing pays

The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for registered nurses at $97,550 a year ($46.90 an hour) as of May 2025. BLS doesn't publish a separate figure for remote nurses, so treat any "average remote nurse salary" you see online with suspicion. What BLS does show is how much the setting matters. The May 2025 medians by industry on the same page:

Where RNs workMedian annual pay (May 2025)
Government (excluding education and hospitals)$110,780
Hospitals$100,220
Ambulatory healthcare services$91,230
Nursing and residential care facilities$84,300
Educational services$78,620

For LPNs and LVNs, the BLS lists a median of $64,400 a year ($30.96 an hour) in May 2025. Remote roles posted by insurers and health systems set their own ranges, so compare any posted range against these medians.

RN work from home jobs, role by role

Telephone triage and telehealth. You take calls or video visits, assess symptoms using protocols, and tell patients whether they need the ER, an urgent care visit, or home care. Health systems, insurers, and nurse advice lines all run these. Advice lines run around the clock, so evening, overnight, and weekend shifts are common (our post on overnight work from home jobs covers other remote night roles and how night pay works). This is the closest remote role to bedside work and usually asks for acute care experience.

Case management. Case managers coordinate care for patients with chronic or complex conditions: following up after discharge, arranging services, and checking that the care plan is working. Insurers and health plans are a common employer for this role. The CCM certification from the Commission for Case Manager Certification isn't required for every job, but many posts ask for it. To sit for it, an RN needs either 12 months of full-time case management work supervised by a CCM, 24 months without that supervision, or 12 months supervising case managers.

Utilization review. You review medical records against criteria to decide whether a hospital stay, procedure, or treatment is medically necessary, then approve it or send it to a physician reviewer. It's mostly computer work with little patient contact, which suits nurses who want a break from the phone. Prior authorization roles at insurers are a close cousin.

Remote patient monitoring. Patients at home send readings like blood pressure, weight, or glucose through connected devices. You watch the data, call when numbers go out of range, and escalate to the provider. Cardiology and chronic care programs use this a lot.

Clinical documentation and chart review. Clinical documentation integrity (CDI) nurses review charts so that the record matches the patient's real condition, and query physicians when something is missing. Quality abstraction and chart audit roles work the same way. Hospitals often want you to have worked on-site in the role before going remote.

Nursing informatics. Informatics nurses help build, test, and train staff on electronic health record systems. It's one of the better-paid remote paths, but it usually needs experience first. The ANCC's informatics nursing certification requires a BSN, the equivalent of two years as a full-time RN, 30 hours of informatics continuing education in the last three years, and informatics practice hours (for example, 2,000 hours in the last three years).

Education and writing. Online nursing programs hire clinical faculty and course developers, and health companies hire nurses to write patient education material. If writing appeals to you, our freelance writing guide covers finding the first client.

LPN work from home jobs

There are fewer remote options for LPNs, and the reason is scope of practice. The BLS notes that LPN duties and supervision rules depend on the state. Many independent assessment tasks, like triage, fall to RNs. Some certifications are closed too: the Commission for Case Manager Certification says LPN and LVN licenses don't qualify for the CCM.

Remote roles LPNs do find usually involve following up with patients by phone, scheduling and care coordination under an RN, data collection, chart review, and some prior authorization work. Read each post for "LPN/LVN accepted" and check your state board's rules on what you can do over the phone.

The license question

This is the part that trips people up. In general, a nurse needs a license that's valid where the patient is located, not where the nurse is sitting. If you live in Ohio and take calls from patients in five states, you need to be able to practice in all five.

The Nurse Licensure Compact is how most remote nurses handle this. Nurses who live in a compact state can apply for a multistate license, which the NLC says lets nurses "provide telenursing services to patients across the country without obtaining additional licenses" in other member states. The NLC lists 43 jurisdictions as members right now. If your home state isn't one of them, you'll need individual licenses for other states, and remote employers may only hire you for patients in your own state. Check the NLC's map before you apply.

Where to look for online nursing jobs from home

  • Health system career pages. Search "remote," "telehealth," or "virtual" on the sites of large hospital systems near you, and in compact states further away.
  • Health insurers and health plans. Case management, utilization review, and prior authorization roles mostly live here.
  • USAJOBS. Federal health jobs are posted on USAJOBS. Its help center explains how to filter for fully remote roles, and notes that "telework eligible" is not the same as remote. Federal jobs are always free to apply for.
  • General job boards. Filter by remote and search the role name ("utilization review RN") rather than just "nurse."

Internal moves are often the easiest way in, since the employer already knows your work. If your hospital has a case management or CDI department, ask about transferring in on-site, then moving remote later.

If you want income on the side instead of a new full-time job, our list of side hustles for nurses covers PRN shifts, CPR teaching, legal nurse consulting, and building a health-explainer channel (where a tool like VidPuff can draft and render long-form videos you review). How to spot remote nursing job scams

Real employers verify your license and run background checks. Scammers skip all that and ask for money. The FTC's job scam guide lists the main warning signs:

  • You're asked to pay for training, a starter kit, or a certification before you start.
  • You get a check, deposit it, and are told to send part of it back or buy gift cards with it. The FTC says real employers never do this.
  • You're asked to receive and reship packages.
  • A placement firm wants an upfront fee.

Also be wary of anyone who wants your Social Security number and bank details before a real interview, or who offers a "remote nurse" job without asking which state you're licensed in. Look up the company's main careers page and apply there instead of through a link in a message.

Most remote nursing jobs are W-2 positions, so taxes come out of your paycheck. If you take contract (1099) work, that income is taxable and net earnings of $400 or more usually mean you owe self-employment tax. Talk to a tax professional about your own situation.

FAQ

Can new grad nurses get work from home jobs?

It's rare. Most remote nursing roles ask for at least two years of clinical experience, because you're assessing patients or records without a team around you. Building experience on a unit first, then moving to case management or CDI at the same employer, is the usual route.

What are the best RN work from home jobs with no phone calls?

Utilization review, clinical documentation review, chart audits, and informatics involve the least phone time. Triage and case management are phone heavy.

Are there LPN work from home jobs?

Yes, but fewer than for RNs. Look for care coordination, patient follow-up, chart review, and prior authorization roles that list LPN/LVN as accepted, and confirm the work fits your state's scope of practice.

Do I need a compact license for nurse work from home jobs?

Not always, but it helps a lot. You need a valid license in each state where your patients are. A multistate license through the Nurse Licensure Compact covers all member states, so many remote employers prefer it.
