How to Delete a YouTube Channel in 2026 (or Hide It Instead)

VidPuff Team·Nov 1, 2026·6 min read

To delete a YouTube channel, sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer, click Settings, then Channel, then Advanced settings, and click Remove YouTube content at the bottom. Choose I want to permanently delete my content, tick the boxes to confirm, and click Delete my content. This can't be undone. If you only want the channel out of sight for a while, pick I want to hide my channel on the same screen instead. These steps come from YouTube's Delete or hide your YouTube channel help page, which we checked on November 1, 2026.

Before you click anything, read the next section. Most people who search "how to delete YouTube channel" would be better served by hiding it.

Hide vs delete: what each one does

YouTube gives you two options on the same screen, and they are very different.

Hide channelDelete channel
Can you undo it?Yes, you can re-enable it laterNo, it's permanent
VideosMade privatePermanently deleted
Channel name, likes, subscriptions, subscribersMade privateGone with the channel
Comments, messages, playlists, historyNot listed as deletedPermanently deleted
Google AccountNot affectedNot affected

All of this is from the YouTube help page. It also says that after you re-enable a hidden channel, view and subscriber counts can take up to a week to update.

Some third-party guides say hiding a channel deletes your comments. YouTube's own page doesn't say that. It only lists the channel name, videos, likes, subscriptions, and subscribers as things that become private. If your comments matter to you, assume the worst and download what you need first.

When to hide: you're taking a break, you're not sure, you might want the subscribers back, or you want to rebrand later. Hiding keeps your options open.

When to delete: you're sure you never want any of it back, and you want the videos gone rather than just private.

How to delete YouTube channel content, step by step

You need a computer for this. YouTube's help page says you can't currently delete a channel on mobile devices. If you only have a phone, open YouTube in your phone's browser and switch it to desktop mode, or use any computer.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio with the account that owns the channel.
  2. Check you're on the right channel. Click your profile picture in the top right and switch channels if you have more than one.
  3. In the left menu, click Settings.
  4. Click Channel, then Advanced settings.
  5. Scroll to the bottom and click Remove YouTube content. YouTube may ask you to sign in again.
  6. Click I want to permanently delete my content.
  7. Read the list, tick the boxes to confirm, and click Delete my content.

YouTube says the deletion "may take some time," and video thumbnails may still show up on the site for a short while. It doesn't give a set number of days.

Once it's done, your channel URL and name stop being visible or searchable. Your watch time still counts in YouTube's overall reports, but it's no longer tied to the deleted channel.

How to hide a YouTube channel

The steps are the same up to step 5. Then:

  1. Click I want to hide my channel.
  2. Tick the boxes to confirm what will be hidden.
  3. Click Hide my channel.

To bring it back later, YouTube's Re-enable hidden channel page says to sign in and fill out the channel creation form. Don't click the option to use a business or other name, because that creates a brand new channel instead of restoring the old one. If the channel sits under a Brand Account, you restore it from the add or manage channels option in your account settings.

Download your videos first

Deleting is permanent, so save anything you might want before you start. Google Takeout lets you export your YouTube data, including your uploaded videos:

  1. Go to takeout.google.com and sign in.
  2. Deselect everything, then select YouTube and YouTube Music.
  3. Pick a delivery method (an email link or a cloud drive), a file type, and an archive size.
  4. Click Create export.

Google says an export can take anywhere from minutes to days, and the download link expires after about 7 days. Wait until you have the files on your own drive before you delete the channel.

If you'd rather make videos than read about it, VidPuff turns a title into a faceless video. No waitlist, cancel anytime.

If some videos are missing from the export, Google's page says to check whether the channel belongs to a Brand Account. If it does, switch to that Brand Account and run the export from there.

Channels on a Brand Account

Many channels, especially ones made for a business or a second "faceless" channel, sit on a Brand Account rather than your personal Google Account. Two things to know:

  • Deleting the channel in YouTube Studio deletes the YouTube channel only. The Brand Account itself still exists.
  • Deleting the whole Brand Account removes more. Google's Manage your Brand Account page says that if you delete a Brand Account, "all of its content will be removed across all Google services." Only an owner can do it, and you need to have been an owner for 7 days first.

The YouTube help page adds one more warning: if you delete the primary owner account linked to a channel, the channel is deleted too. So if you're cleaning up old Google accounts, check that none of them owns a channel you want to keep.

Deleting your channel does not delete your Google Account

YouTube's page is clear on this: the steps above delete only your YouTube channel, not the Google Account you sign in with. Your Gmail, Drive, and Photos stay as they are. You can still watch YouTube while signed in, and you can create a new channel later on the same account.

Other options if you only want to clean up

Sometimes the real goal is smaller than deleting everything:

  • Hide a few videos. In YouTube Studio, go to Content, hover over a video, open the Visibility menu, and set it to Private or Unlisted. Private videos can only be seen by you and people you choose. Unlisted videos can be watched by anyone with the link but don't show on your channel or in search (YouTube Help).
  • Rename instead of starting over. If the problem is a name you've outgrown, you can change your YouTube channel name and handle without losing subscribers.
  • Switch the topic. An old channel with a few hundred subscribers can be pointed at a new niche. Our list of YouTube channel ideas can help you pick one.

Starting fresh after deleting

If you deleted a channel because it never found its footing, the second try usually goes better with a clear niche and a schedule you can keep. Our guide on how to start a YouTube channel covers the setup from scratch.

If time to make videos was the problem, a faceless channel is one way around it. VidPuff handles the production side: you type a title, and it writes the script, generates narration, creates a visual for each scene, adds music and captions, and renders a long-form 16:9 video. You review each stage before you upload to YouTube from the app.

FAQ

How to delete YouTube channel on phone?

You can't delete YouTube channel content from the app. YouTube's help page says you can't currently delete a channel on mobile devices. Use YouTube Studio on a computer, or open studio.youtube.com in your phone's browser in desktop mode.

Can you recover a deleted YouTube channel?

YouTube's help pages describe a way to bring back a hidden channel, but not a deleted one. The delete page says deletion is permanent. If there's any chance you'll want the channel back, hide it instead.

How long does it take to delete a YouTube channel?

YouTube doesn't give a number. Its help page says it "may take some time" and that thumbnails may still appear for a short while after you delete.

Does deleting a YouTube channel delete your Google Account?

No. Deleting a YouTube channel removes the channel and its content but leaves your Google Account, Gmail, and other Google services alone. Deleting a Brand Account is different, since that removes the account's content across all Google services.
