Best AI Video Editor in 2026: 5 Picks by What You Edit

VidPuff Team·Nov 5, 2026·6 min read

The best AI video editor for most YouTubers who talk on camera or record voiceovers is Descript, because you edit the video by editing its transcript. If you want something free, start with CapCut or the free version of DaVinci Resolve. If you already edit in Premiere Pro, its AI tools are good enough that switching rarely makes sense. Runway is a different kind of tool: it generates footage rather than cutting it. Below is what each one does well, what it costs on the vendor's own pricing page (checked November 5, 2026), and who should skip it.

One thing first. An AI video editor still needs footage. If you have no footage and want a full video from a topic, you need a generator, not an editor. We cover that split at the end.

Descript: the best AI video editor for talking videos

Descript turns your recording into a transcript. Delete a sentence in the text and it disappears from the video. For anyone who records commentary, tutorials, or podcasts, this is the fastest way to cut a 20-minute ramble down to 8 tight minutes.

The AI tools that matter most for YouTube: Remove Filler Words (cuts the "um"s and "you know"s), Studio Sound (cleans up a cheap mic in a noisy room), and Underlord, its AI assistant for edits like cutting clips or writing titles.

Prices from Descript's pricing page:

  • Free: 60 minutes of media a month, 100 one-time AI credits, 720p export with a watermark.
  • Hobbyist: $16/month billed yearly or $24 monthly. 10 hours of media, 400 AI credits a month, 1080p with no watermark, custom voice clones.
  • Creator: $24/month billed yearly or $35 monthly. 30 hours, 800 AI credits, 4K export.

Skip it if your videos are mostly B-roll and music with no speech. Transcript editing does little for footage without words.

CapCut: the best free AI video editor for beginners

CapCut is where many new creators start because the free version covers most of what a simple YouTube video needs. CapCut's help center lists tools like Auto captions and Background remover, and the editor runs on desktop, web, and phone.

Pricing is the confusing part. CapCut's own help page says Pro pricing "can vary depending on your region, device, and available promotions" and doesn't list a figure, so check the price inside the app before you subscribe. Paying on the desktop or web version can cost a different amount than paying through a phone app store.

Skip it if you plan to scale a channel with a team or need fine control over audio. CapCut is quick, but long edits with many layers get harder to manage than in Resolve or Premiere. We compared it to a generator in VidPuff vs CapCut.

Adobe Premiere Pro: best if you already use Adobe

Premiere Pro is the industry standard editor, and Adobe has added AI on top of it. In its April 2025 announcement, Adobe described three features worth knowing:

  • Generative Extend uses AI to lengthen video and audio clips, so you can hold a shot a second longer or fill a gap. It works with 4K and with vertical video.
  • Media Intelligence recognizes what's in your clips (objects, locations, camera angles) so you can search a big library by description.
  • Caption Translation translates subtitles into 27 languages.

On Adobe's Premiere plans page, the individual plan is US$22.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly, with 25 generative credits a month and a 7-day free trial.

Skip it if you're new to editing and don't want a subscription. The learning curve is real, and the free options below cover the basics.

If you'd rather make videos than read about it, VidPuff turns a title into a faceless video. No waitlist, cancel anytime.

DaVinci Resolve: the best free AI video editor for serious work

The free version of DaVinci Resolve is a full professional editor, not a trial. Blackmagic Design's product page says it handles footage up to Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) at up to 60fps.

Most of the AI lives in the paid Studio version, which costs $236 once (no subscription). Studio adds the DaVinci AI Neural Engine, which powers features like smart reframing, speed warp retiming, super scale upscaling, auto color, Magic Mask, and text-based editing. The current version is DaVinci Resolve 21.

Skip it if you want results in your first hour. Resolve rewards people who stick with it, but it's a lot of software. If you only post one video a week, CapCut or Descript will get you there faster.

Runway: for generating shots, not cutting them

Runway sits in the AI video editor search results, but it does a different job. It generates new shots with its AI video models. You'd use it to make a few striking B-roll shots, then cut them together in one of the editors above.

From Runway's pricing page: the free plan gives 125 one-time credits. Standard is $15 a month ($12 billed yearly) for 625 credits a month, Pro is $35 ($28 yearly) for 2,250 credits, and Max is $95 ($76 yearly) for 9,500 credits. Credits go fast on video generation, so it's a poor way to fill a 10-minute video. We ran the numbers in VidPuff vs Runway.

Skip it if you just need to trim, caption, and export. You'd pay for generation you won't use.

AI video editor vs AI video generator

People searching for the best AI video editor are often after two different things:

  1. An editor makes your existing footage faster to cut. You still record or collect clips. Everything above is in this group.
  2. A generator makes the video from a prompt or title. You don't need any footage.

For faceless YouTube channels, the second type often fits better, because there's no footage to edit in the first place. VidPuff is one of these: you type a title, it writes the script, generates narration, creates a visual for each scene, adds music and captions, and renders a long-form 16:9 video. You review each stage and can change the script, voice, images, and music. It makes long-form videos only, not Shorts. You can try it by paying once from $5 (about one standard 5-minute video) with no plan.

Many creators use both: a generator for the first draft and an editor like CapCut or Resolve for a final pass. Our guide on how to make AI videos walks through which tool type fits which kind of video, and the best AI faceless video generators compares the generator side.

How to pick

  • You talk on camera or narrate: Descript.
  • You're new and want free: CapCut, then move to Resolve if you outgrow it.
  • You want free and powerful, and have time to learn: DaVinci Resolve.
  • You already pay for Adobe: Premiere Pro.
  • You need a few generated shots: Runway, plus one of the editors above.
  • You have no footage at all: a story-to-video generator, not an editor.

Whatever you pick, check the pricing page on the day you sign up. Plans and prices change, and CapCut doesn't publish one fixed price.

FAQ

What is the best AI video editor for beginners?

CapCut is the easiest place to start, and its free version includes tools like auto captions. If your videos are mostly you talking, Descript's free plan is worth trying too, though it exports at 720p with a watermark.

What is the best free AI video editor?

DaVinci Resolve's free version is a full professional editor. CapCut's free version is simpler and faster to learn. Most of Resolve's AI features (the Neural Engine) need the paid Studio version.

Can AI edit a YouTube video for me?

It can do a lot of the slow parts: cutting filler words, cleaning audio, adding captions, and finding clips. You still decide the structure and check the result. Tools that build a whole video from a title are generators, which is a different category.

Is Runway an AI video editor?

Not in the usual sense. Runway generates footage with AI models, and you'd still cut the final video in an editor. Its free plan includes 125 one-time credits to test it.

Want to try making a faceless video? Give VidPuff a title and it drafts the script, voiceover, visuals, music, and captions. You can change any part before it renders.
